The Beauty of the Night Shift

Elizabeth Bradshaw has been an employee of Baptist Health for nearly five years, and she has been one of the many Clinical Pharmacists that are pleased to enter the hospital for the night shift. There’s a certain amount of freedom and variety that goes into an overnight shift, and for Elizabeth, she has been through the other options during her tenure with us. After Elizabeth completed her pharmacy internship (coincidentally at our North Little Rock location), she realized that working with a looser schedule fit her needs exactly. She was able to try her hand at a little bit of everything, and she had time to pursue her other interests. Anything can pop up during a night shift. I handle all the new medication orders that come in overnight and deliver them to the floor. We handle any physician consults that come in, whether they want us to administer antibiotics, anticoagulants, and answer phone calls and questions from nurses about their patients’ medications. We compound IVs, do some chemo, manage the NICU. It’s a grab bag and we handle a lot of the responsibility. Like every Clinical Pharmacist, Elizabeth is assigned a partner for her shifts, and she’s glad to be able to develop a solid bond with whoever is her partner-in-health for that week. With an alternating schedule of seven days on, seven days off, she’s able to interact with all members of the Clinical Pharmacy team and get to know them on a personal level. “It’s almost like having a vacation,” Elizabeth remarked about her schedule. There’s some recovery time to act on a normal schedule afterwards, but I really like our system. My advice? Don’t be scared of nights. A lot of people think they can’t do it, but it’s not true. Our department is a fantastic place to work and you get a wide range of experience because we’re such a large hospital. Every day is different, and you get to learn new things all the time. You’re constantly learning here! With Baptist Health, our employees have an innate desire to learn and grow. Elizabeth has the opportunity for picking up new skills every night in the hospital, but she also picks up new hobbies and books in her spare time. She points out that her team is also filled to the brim of these like-minded, curious employees, and their fellowship is truly what makes their shifts fly by! “I love it here,” she said simply. “There’s no other way to describe it!” Join Elizabeth and our amazing team of Clinical Physicians all over the state of Arkansas. If you’re looking for a flexible schedule, a varied work life, and a solid group of coworkers, we know just the place for you!
